The homeworld of the protagonist Lin Sanjiu.

History[]

In the month of October after the 104th day of an ongoing global heat wave[1] at around 1 a.m.[2] Lin Sanjiu's homeworld changed into Hyperthermal Hell. On that fateful night, the temperature became 56°C according to Ren Nan, which Lin Sanjiu remarked would have killed normal humans several times over due to acute hyperthermia and severe dehydration.[2] However the temperature continues to rise and may have slowly risen to 85°C.[3] Humanity's unprepardness for the apocolyptic heat wave resulted in 70-80% of the global population to be wiped out in a day.[4] The 20-30% survivng population most likely being newly evolved Posthumans.

Environment[]

Hyperthermal Hell is a 'New World' dominated by intense heat. The air is so hot and dry that it makes breathing difficult, and near all bodies of water have evaporated. Additionally, there is not a single bit of greenery left

trees outside was like charcoal, black and dry. All their leaves had fallen to the ground, they gathered in a black patch, and it was almost impossible to tell their original form. Some of the trees on the walkway even broke into two because their thin trucks became too dry and brittle to support their weight."

— Chapter 19: Who Moved my Corpse Mountain?

and because of the lack of greenery, "the soil degraded into sand under the high heat due to desertification.[5]"

The overall environment has been noted to be sandy with wind stirring up "thick clouds of yellow sand wreaking havoc upon the land.[5]" which sticks to your everything and hinders visuality greatly. The wind has also been noted to be unpleasant- "There was still wind in this Hyperthermal Hell, but it would be better if there weren’t. Every bout of wind was as if a pot of red hot coal had been thrown at their face.[5]"

The dazzling sunlight shined down from the blue skies and only revealed its unspeakable malice when it blazed over the earth. Shriveled dead bodies covered in burns were found on every single street. Buildings split open under the high heat, and houses made of inferior materials had long disintegrated into small hills of rubble. There were cracks on the ground and occasionally, one could spot a considerably healthy duoluozhong moving around the ruins."

— Chapter 22: Starting a Journey!

Daytime temperatures have been observed to melt plastic[6], therefore it has become common practice to do all activities at night when it's cooler and sleep in the day.

Indigenous Species[]

Duoluozhong[]

Though Duoluozhong are not indigenous to just Hyperthermal Hell, as Marcie previously mentioned in Chapter 6, "Apparently, the weakness of the duoluozhong here is the slow speed of their movement" meaning there are differences between Duoluozhong from world to world.

Hyperthermal Hell Duluozhong all have the same overall agenda: Drink bodily fluids to become/ stay hydrated.

Luxury Mall Tropical Forest[]

The most luxurious shopping mall in the city, located near Lin Sanjiu's ex-boyfriends' condominium estate.[7] Reportedly the shopping mall was designed by a famous French architect and is 5 stories tall with dense foliage of tropical plants planted in the centre. Possibly due to some sort of stratified structural design, the tropical trees grew up to the 5th story lift [8] and to create the visual impact of an integrative nature experience, the ceiling was built with transparent reinforced glass. Which in present Doomsday meant that it was a giant barbeque.[7]

Despite being a giant magnifying glass and temperatures continuosly rising, the forest is completly unharmed. It's only when a mountain of corpses chucked out from the supermarket goes missing does it come to Lin Sanjiu and co's attention that something is amiss.[6]

Turns out the tropical forest is unharmed because it has evolved. It's now a carnivorous forest, unbothered if its' food has been dead and rotting for a while (evident by the missing corpse mountain that had been fermenting in the sun) and doesn't spare even the clothing of its' victim.[6][9]

To catch its' prey the tropical forest has long vines (spanning over half the shopping mall’s central plaza), which were first described as green but Lin Sanjiu corrected the observation of the vine colour being closer to a sepia brown. However since the vines were covered in so much dried blood it was impossible to determine what the original colour of the vines was.[9]

The vines are so strong that the wind created from its movements is able to fling broken concrete up in the air, "the few broken slabs of concrete which was stirred into the wind flew toward the two". It was also observed that the vines seemed to "in mid-air [grow] eyes" and "[understand] what was [being] said". Thus it appears that the forest reacts to sound, "he quickly looked toward the tropical forest and noticed that the leaves of the tallest few coconut trees in the center started to move —it was practically like how a person turned his head when he heard a sound."[9]

The tropical forest was discovered to be also connected to the flowerbed on the fifth story.[9]

After a month of being left to it's own devices, the forest engulfed the entire mall save for the supermarket where Lin Sanjiu and co. stayed in.

A little sunlight immediately seeped in revealing the underside of the cover which was an intricate green network of branches, tendrils, and leaves. The three of them finally realized why it was pitch dark outside the metal shutters, it was because the entire area was covered by plants. Subsequently, there were more movements in the shadow. All sort of large and small, densely-packed green vines started stirring one by one as if they could smell the scent of a human"

— Chapter 22: Starting a Journey!

It was subsequently burned to death, by smashing the glass ceiling and throwing high-content alcohol, cans of petrol and 4-5 lit matches.[10]

The flames spread out, hissing and crackling, it was not quick but steadfast. In a short time, the first floor was fully lit up by a sea of red burning flames. Before even burning for five minutes, they heard a sharp shrill from the center of the large hall in the middle of the shopping mall. It sounded as if something was in pain. All the leaves started flailing around crazily."

— Chapter 22: Starting a Journey!

The building later collapsed in flames, "they heard a large “Boom!” The glass ceiling situated on the top floor of the shopping mall collapsed down to the ground due to fire, following which, half the building was totally buried in flames."[10]

Weakness:

  • There was a blind spot at the escalator in the Mall[9] (before it grew to eventually cover the entire mall)
  • It was burned to death using high content alcohol and petrol.

Deep Sea Creatures[]

Deep-sea Dragonfish[]

A gigantic and edible fish which has mutated at the very depths of a marine trench[11]. The mutated fish has dark coloured skin and a "long appendage on its lower jaw which looked like a fluorescent tube.[12]" From this Description it's most likely originally the Deep-sea Dragonfish (as so called by Shen Lianqi) was some species of Football fish.

"The fish was staring at her with a pair of white eyes without pupils. Its mouth, the size of a train carriage, was half opened revealing its set of dense, uneven, jagged teeth. Only half the fish was above the surface of the water"

— Chapter 100: McDonald’s

Shen Lianqi explains further that, "It is a species of fish which have a light-producing appendage, a photophore, on their lower jaw to lure their preys toward them…" he had witnessed another mutated creature fall victim to the Deep-sea Dragonfish's photophore appendage.

When I first arrived, I was lucky. The dragonfish did not notice me but instead focused its attention on another mutated… Cough… who knows what that was. The fish’s photophore glowed, and the unknown creature foolishly walked into the dragonfish’s mouth, as if hypnotized. That unknown creature looked really happy, so I guess that, to that creature, the dragonfish’s head must have looked like females’ nest. It probably entered the fish’s mouth seeking for a mate, but the dragonfish closed its mouth and bit it into two."

— Shen Lianqi to Lin Sanjiu, Chapter 101: Shen Lianqi and His Friends

Lin Sanjiu infront of the Deep-sea Dragonfish experienced seeing a McDonald's, having only lived off of melted Swiss chocolates and canned Starbucks coffee[13][12] she welcomed the strange sight and entered the 'building.' If it wasn't for her contraction of Versu Poison, she would have been dead. The Deep-sea Dragonfish died due to the poison.

It's also noted by Lin Sanjiu that the Dragonfish was hideous and it's meat coarse and hard to chew.[11]

Snow-white Prawn[]

A human-sized edible prawn that is snow-white in colour. Lin Sanjiu thinks that the prawn was way more delicious than that dragonfish. There seems to be an abundance of these prawns somewhere since Lin Sanjiu noticed that it wasn't the first time Shen Lianqi and friends had eaten this prawn due to how skillful they were at butchering the prawn.[14]

Survival[]

Minimal needs of survival is some form of heat resistence.

Known Heat Resistance Abilities:

  • Extreme Climate Adaptation: Able to survive in climates with extremely high or low temperatures. (As seen in Luther)
  • Heat Resistance Adaptation: Able to effectively resist environmental temperatures up to 125°C. (As seen in Lin Sanjiu)

Known Heat Resistance Items:

Professor Bai's Heat Resistance Adaptation Medicine

With technology recieved from a duoluozhong to "help" Professor Bai rebuild civilization[15], Professor Bai was able to give out a medicine that could artificially induce the Heat Resistance Adaptation ability. Even in people who have a Potential Growth Rate (P.G.R) of zero a.k.a Normal Humans, thus making them afrtificial Posthumans.[16]

Note: Because Normal Humans have a P.G.R of zero they will be unable to gain new abilities even though they've become Posthumans.[16]

Cause of Death[]

Most Non-Posthumans died from dehydration or being burnt to death due to the high temperatures.

"The scarlet red blisters on his skin burst open. They were all over his face and hands; it was as if he was scalded by hot boiling water. It was a ghastly sight seeing the blisters burst and revealed patches of damaged skin."

— An unfortunate Fat man in Car, Chapter 9: Everything in the Supermarket is Free on Doomsday

Other possible causes of death living in Hyperthermal Hell is starvation, Pocket Dimensions, Duoluozhongs, PVP (Posthuman vs Posthuman), other evolved creatures i.e deep sea creatures or plants.

Trivia[]

  • The News being played in Ren Nans condiminium (Chapter 1), mentions that there had been an ongoing global heat wave and as of the airing had been the 104th day of said heat wave. The News Anchor additionally mentions that there had already been deaths due to hyperthermia in Africa, India, and Southeast Asia. Further stating "our country’s death toll due to heat stroke has already reached 67 people."
  • The duoluozhong that "helped" Professor Bai was later to have been revealed in the story to have been a Posthuman from another world. Who met his demise in Hyperthermal Hell for being unable to gain an ability to combat against the severe heat, thus becoming a duoluozhong after death.
  • ("She remembered that the duoluozhongs, the masterminds behind Oasis, were actually humans before they were sent to Hyperthermal Hell. They only became duoluozhongs because they couldn’t develop Heat Resistance Adaptation.)[17]"
  • The Consular Officer of Hyperthermal Hell was Fan Dang, a resident of Oasis.
  • The Luxury Shopping Mall Lin San jiu and co. were staying in was having it's 5th year Anniversary in the month Doomsday happened (October). So to celebrate, the Mall was open 24hrs for the entire month, allowing Lin Sanjiu and co. to seek refuge there in the early hours of the night.[7]
